The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (Film and television series) |
Drumstruck (Theatre) |
Founded in 2004, Cinechicks develops, produces, and finances all forms of entertainment that revolve around the human condition – what it means to be alive. We have a particular passion for stories involving women, culture, Africa, and the awkwardness of youth.
Our mission is to inspire compassion, to affect change, and to have fun while doing it. Of particular importance to us is our audience. We believe that people are entitled to moving, smart, wonderful entertainment, never to be talked down to or belittled with dumb content. This has given rise to Cinechicks being coined, “The People’s Entertainment Company.”
Recently we’ve expanded our mission to include the raucous and fun, male-centric division, Michigan and Trumbull Productions. Inspired by the Detroit cross streets, Michigan and Trumbull where the old Tiger Stadium housed legendary greats like Ty Cobb, Al Kaline, Jack Morris, Kirk Gibson and Justin Verlander – the new production arm’s key mission is to work with emerging, new creative talent – and to turn them into legends too.
Together Cinechicks and Michigan and Trumbull source projects and partnerships from around the world, and reinvest back into the local communities with whom we work.
Cinechicks produces major and complex projects that have a sustainable effect on world communities. We created and initiated the critically-acclaimed, award-winning, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency movie, based on the international best selling series of novels by Alexander McCall-Smith. We set up key partnerships with directors Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack, and producers, Harvey and Bob Weinstein of the Weinstein Company. We raised the financing, in particular from the Republic of Botswana. The first movie (the pilot) was bought by the HBO, and in turn, they commissioned 6 one-hour episodes of a television series. The series has been seen all over the world and has an active (and verbal!) fan base.
Another example of our work is the theatrical extravaganza, Drumstruck. The show consisted of an interactive show – each audience member had its own 3-foot djembe (drum) and played along with the cast of twelve African performers. The show opened to rave reviews and sell-out audiences, and ran for several years in New York City. Cinechicks first spotted Drumstruck at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa and secured a partnership with Dodger Productions (Jersey Boys) in New York City.
Cinechicks is a founding member of The Memory Box Project, a video project to put those dying of AIDS on camera to preserve their memories as well as their heritage for their loved ones.
